AI Stethoscope to Revolutionize Early Detection of RHD
High-Level Scientific Committee Meeting Held at SGPGI
Major Initiative Launched to Eliminate Rheumatic Heart Disease from Uttar Pradesh
A high-level meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee was held on July 11, 2025, at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, to guide the “RHD Roko” initiative — a major step towards eliminating rheumatic heart disease (RHD) from Uttar Pradesh. This initiative is a collaborative effort between SGPGI, the Government of Uttar Pradesh, and Stanford Biodesign, aiming to eradicate RHD over the next decade.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Parth Sarathi Sen Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Medical Education Department. From SGPGI, Padma Shri Prof. R.K. Dhiman, Prof. Aditya Kapoor, and Prof. S.K. Agarwal led the proceedings.
The meeting saw participation from several national and international experts including:
Prof. Anurag Mairal, Dr. Saunli Doshi, and Dr. Jagdish Chaturvedi from Stanford Biodesign
Dr. Craig Sable from the American Heart Association
Dr. Anita Saxena from Fortis Escorts
Dr. Prakash Raj Regmi from Nepal Heart Foundation
Dr. Arpit Patnaik, Dr. Rohitashwa Kumar, and Dr. Satyabrata Rautray from PATH
Dr. Rohit Singh from Edwards Lifesciences
Dr. Charit Bhograj from Tricog
Dr. S.K. Gautam and Dr. Reshma Masood from the National Health Mission, Uttar Pradesh
Prof. Anurag Mairal described the initiative as a transformative public health model. Prof. Dhiman called it a historic step in the direction of preventive cardiology. Mr. Parth Sarathi Sen Sharma emphasized integrating the initiative with existing government schemes through the involvement of RBSK (Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram) workers.
Prof. Aditya Kapoor highlighted that the early detection of RHD is now possible through a combination of oral questionnaires and an AI-enabled stethoscope designed by Tricog, which has already been successfully tested at SGPGI. Prof. Agarwal stressed the need for capacity building at the district level for early diagnosis and timely referral.
The "RHD Roko" project will be implemented in four phases:
1. Preliminary screening
2. Detection of cardiac murmurs using the AI stethoscope
3. Echocardiography at district hospitals
4. Referral of confirmed cases to SGPGI
The committee will also develop diagnostic protocols for DEICs, PHCs, and CHCs across the state, along with training, implementation, and monitoring.
