Complex Shoulder Surgery Performed for the First Time at KGMU Using Balloon Spacer
Advanced Technique Offers Relief to Elderly Patient

For the first time, the Department of Orthopedics at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has successfully performed a complex shoulder surgery using a balloon spacer on a 72-year-old patient. According to the doctors, this is the first such surgery conducted in any government hospital in the state using this advanced technique. In this procedure, a special balloon-like implant was placed between the shoulder bones.
As per Department Head Prof. Ashish Kumar and Prof. Shantanu Kumar, the elderly patient, a resident of Lucknow, had suffered a serious shoulder injury after a sudden fall. Despite visiting several hospitals, he found no relief, and surgery was advised everywhere. However, due to his age, the family was hesitant to proceed with a surgical option. On a relative’s recommendation, they brought the patient to the Orthopedics Department at KGMU.
After thorough consultation and necessary investigations, doctors recommended a minimally invasive procedure using a balloon spacer. This method is commonly used for treating torn rotator cuffs. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint and enable arm movement. Injuries in this area are often complex and difficult to treat.
According to spokesperson Prof. K.K. Singh, the patient was in severe pain, and repairing the damaged shoulder muscles was a challenge. Therefore, a balloon spacer was implanted using an arthroscopic (keyhole) procedure. A small incision was made to insert the balloon between the shoulder bones. The entire surgery took only 30 minutes. Post-surgery, the patient experienced complete relief from pain and regained shoulder mobility.

किंग जार्ज चिकित्सा विश्वविद्यालय (केजीएमयू) के हड्डी रोग विभाग ने पहली बार बैलून स्पेसर की मदद से एक 72 वर्षीय बुजुर्ग के कंधे की जटिल सर्जरी करने में कामयाबी हासिल की है। डाक्टरों का दावा है कि आधुनिक विधि से प्रदेश के किसी सरकारी संस्थान में पहली बार ऐसी सर्जरी की गई है। बैलून स्पेसर की मदद से कंधे के बीच हड्डियों में गुब्बारा प्रत्यारोपित किया गया।
विभागाध्यक्ष प्रो. आशीष कुमार और प्रो. शांतनु कुमार के मुताबिक, लखनऊ निवासी बुजुर्ग कुछ समय पहले अचानक गिर गए थे, जिसकी वजह से उनके कंधे में गंभीर चोटें आईं। कई अस्पताल में दिखाया, लेकिन राहत नहीं मिली। हर जगह सर्जरी की सलाह दी गई। उम्र अधिक होने के चलते सर्जरी के लिए परिवारजन तैयार नहीं थे। रिश्तेदार की सलाह पर मरीज को लेकर केजीएमयू

के हड्डी रोग विभाग पहुंचे। यहां पूरी जानकारी लेने के बाद कई जांचें कराई गईं। बैलून स्पेसर से बेहद छोटी सर्जरी की सलाह दी गई। दरअसल, बैलून स्पेसर एक प्रकार की कंधे की सर्जरी है, जो रोटेटर कफ के फटने के इलाज के लिए उपयोग की जाती है। रोटेटर कफ कंधे के बीच वाले हिस्से की मांसपेशियों और रेशों का एक समूह है। यह कंधे को जोड़कर रखता है, जिससे हाथ घुमाने में आसानी होती है। ऐसी जगह चोट लगने पर इलाज जटिल हो जाता है। प्रवक्ता प्रो.
केके सिंह ने बताया कि चोट की वजह से बुजुर्ग के कंधे में भीषण दर्द हो रहा था। कंधे की मांसपेशियों की मरम्मत चुनौतीपूर्ण थी। ऐसे में स्पेस बैलून स्पेसर सर्जरी से इलाज किया गया। दूरबीन विधि से एक छोटा छेद कर गुब्बारा कंधे की हड्डियों के बीच प्रत्यारोपित किया गया। इसमें कुल 30 मिनट लगे। मरीज का दर्द भी पूरी तरह ठीक हो गया। कंधे का मूवमेंट भी बढ़िया हो गया। खास बात यह है कि बुजुर्ग को इस प्रक्रिया के अगले दिन घर भेज दिया गया।
