PGI Experts from Five Departments Bring Relief to Narendra's Family

Modern diagnostic tools and clinical experience offer timely relief to patients

Voice gradually faded, fear replaced worry

By Kumar Sanjay, Lucknow

Life came to a standstill for 74-year-old Narendra Kumar, a resident of Kohugada village in Sant Kabir Nagar district, about a month ago. His voice had started to weaken gradually. Initially, the family thought it was a minor infection. However, after consulting several doctors without any improvement, worry gave way to fear.

An endoscopy of the throat revealed a lump beneath the voice box. Based on its appearance and symptoms, doctors feared it could be cancer—a diagnosis that struck the rural family like a bolt of lightning.

A team of specialists from five departments at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) came together to assess the case using advanced technology and extensive clinical experience. The team included Prof. Amit Keshari (Neuro-Otology), Prof. Vikas Agarwal (Clinical Immunology), Prof. Zafar Niyaz (Radiology), Prof. Manish Ora (Nuclear Medicine), and Prof. Manoj Jain (Histopathology).

According to the specialists, treatment could not proceed without first identifying the nature of the lump. The initial biopsy revealed hyperplasia—an abnormal increase in cell growth. While cancer was not confirmed, the suspicion remained. This led to a plan for a CT-guided biopsy and a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan.

Given the sensitive location of the lump, Prof. Zafar Niyaz conducted the biopsy with special care, and the PET scan was performed under the supervision of Prof. Manish Ora.

The reports brought unexpected relief—it was not cancer but an autoimmune condition. This news brought a wave of joy and hope to Narendra’s family. Not only did the experts identify the correct diagnosis, but they also initiated treatment to restore his voice and overall health.

According to the doctors, even if it had been cancer, it was at an early stage and could have been effectively treated with radiotherapy. Conditions like this are often linked to autoimmune diseases such as sarcoidosis, which is why a thorough investigation of every symptom is critical.

Narendra’s son, Anurag, said, “The past month felt like a mountain we had to climb, but the PGI team gave us strength and hope.”

Experts emphasize that timely diagnosis and awareness are crucial to saving lives. Whether it's cancer or another complex condition, the earlier the treatment begins, the greater the chances of success.
