"Why would anyone join a government medical college with a salary that is ₹30,000 less?"
Filling faculty positions in Uttar Pradesh’s government medical colleges has become a major challenge for the Department of Medical Education. Despite offering preferred postings to selected Assistant Professors, most are reluctant to join.
Key Highlights:
Low Turnout for Counseling:
Out of 43 selected Assistant Professors called for counseling on Tuesday, only 8 turned up.
Major Absenteeism Identified:
An April review found that 87 selected candidates had not yet joined. Fresh counseling was held on May 20–21 to encourage them with location choices.
Counseling Results (May 20):
5 chose BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur
1 each opted for Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Kanpur
Main Reasons for Reluctance:
Lack of resources and lower salary in state medical colleges
Institutions like KGMU, SGPGI, and RMLIMS offer up to ₹30,000 higher salary, better research opportunities, and modern infrastructure
Complaints about political interference and inadequate facilities in many government colleges
Government's Appeal:
Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak urged doctors to see this not just as a job but as a service opportunity to contribute to state healthcare development
Next Steps:
Another 44 Assistant Professors are called for counseling on Wednesday. If they also refuse to join, a final list will be prepared for further action.
> Conclusion:
Mere selection is not enough. Providing competitive facilities and a conducive work environment is essential to attract and retain qualified professionals in public service.
