Clinical Nutrition Update Organized at SGPGI
Experts Emphasize the Role of Nutrition and Diet Therapy in Managing Lifestyle Diseases
Lucknow –
A “Clinical Nutrition Update” program was organized under the joint aegis of the Department of Nutrition at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), the Indian Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and the Poshan Dhara Association. Experts at the event highlighted the importance of controlling GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), obesity, and metabolic disorders through nutrition and lifestyle modifications.
Professor Anshuman Elhence from the Department of Gastroenterology stated that GERD is a common but serious condition that cannot be managed solely with medication. He emphasized that a balanced diet and improved lifestyle are essential for prevention. Prof. Elhence advised patients to avoid oily, spicy, and acidic foods, refrain from lying down for at least two hours after meals, use elevated pillows while sleeping, and avoid tobacco and alcohol. He identified obesity as a major cause of GERD.
Prof. V.K. Paliwal from the Department of Neurology highlighted the benefits of the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. He explained that methods such as the “16:8 fasting” regimen, consuming low-calorie meals twice a week, and following a ketogenic diet not only help with weight loss but are also effective in managing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. He noted that during a ketogenic diet, the body uses fat as an energy source, which has shown benefits for neurological disorders as well.
Pediatrician Dr. P. Bhattacharya provided insights into constipation issues among children.
On this occasion, Dr. Prerna Kapoor and program organizer Dr. Rama Tripathi expressed concern over the rising obesity rates in India. They shared that around 135 million people in the country are affected by obesity, with one in four adults and one in five urban children suffering from the condition. This issue not only leads to diabetes and heart disease but also impacts mental health.
SGPGI Director Prof. R.K. Dhiman, Prof. MLB Bhatt, and Prof. LK Bharti advocated for the revival of traditional dietary practices. The event witnessed the participation of a large number of doctors, officials, and staff members.
