Mobility Restored with Mega Prosthesis

Mobility Restored with Mega Prosthesis
First Successful Knee Implant at SGPGIMS

Lucknow: In a medical breakthrough, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, has for the first time successfully performed a knee replacement using the Mega Prosthesis technique. This advanced procedure is particularly effective where Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is not possible, such as in cases of bone loss due to tumors or severe damage.

The surgery was carried out at the Apex Trauma Centre by Associate Professor Dr. Amit Kumar and his team from the Department of Orthopaedics. The patient, 45-year-old Sangeeta Devi from Fatehpur, had previously undergone surgery for a spinal tumor. Over time, weakness in her right leg led to repeated dislocation of her knee joint, leaving her unable to walk.

Before the implant, Additional Professor Dr. Anil Singh of Radiodiagnosis successfully treated her hematoma. Once her condition stabilized, the orthopaedic team proceeded with the Mega Prosthesis surgery. During the operation, Additional Professor Dr. Vansh from Anaesthesiology administered ultrasound-guided spinal anesthesia, crucial in this complex case.

Institute Director Prof. R.K. Dhiman hailed the success and congratulated the team. Prof. Arun Kumar Srivastava, Head of the Apex Trauma Centre, said the achievement reflected “excellent multi-disciplinary coordination.” Sangeeta Devi has now recovered well and is walking independently.

What is a Mega Prosthesis?

A large artificial implant used when a significant portion of bone is damaged.

Especially beneficial after tumor removal or when bone preservation is not possible.

Provides a solution when standard Total Knee Replacement is not feasible.

Restores mobility and helps preserve the limb.
