SGPGI Achieves Major Breakthrough in Heart Valve Disease Research
Scientists Successfully Grow Living Human Heart Valve Cells in Laboratory for the First Time

Scientists at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow, have achieved a major breakthrough in the treatment of heart valve disease. For the first time, researchers have successfully grown living cells from a patient's heart valve in the laboratory. This achievement is expected to help develop new medicines that can prevent heart valves from getting damaged. It may also pave the way for creating artificial heart valves using a patient's own cells in the future.
The research was carried out jointly by Prof. Shantanu Pandey, Prof. Surendra Kumar Agrawal, Prof. Vikas Agrawal, Dr. Mohit K. Rai, Dr. Alok Kumar, Charan Sai Ramireddy, Anjali Singh, and Dr. Vinita Agrawal. The team collected living cells from damaged heart valves removed during valve replacement surgeries and successfully cultured them in the laboratory.
The study found that continuous inflammation and fibrosis (hardening of tissues) are the main reasons behind heart valve damage. Researchers believe that if these changes can be controlled with medicines at an early stage, many patients may avoid heart valve replacement surgery. The cultured cells will also provide a reliable model for testing new drugs before they are used in patients.
The study was supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. Its findings have been accepted for publication in the Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry.
SGPGI Director Prof. R. K. Dhiman congratulated the research team and said that this achievement opens new possibilities for the treatment of heart valve diseases. He added that the study could lead to more effective and personalized treatment for patients while also supporting future advances in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
