North India's First Successful Haplo-Identical Bone Marrow Transplant for Child with X-ALD at SGPGIMS
Five-year-old boy from Basti gets a new lease of life; father donates stem cells

Doctors at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, have successfully performed North India's first haplo-identical bone marrow (stem cell) transplant for a five-year-old boy suffering from the rare genetic disorder X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD). The institute said this is the first successful transplant of its kind for this disease in North India.
The child, a resident of Basti district, received stem cells from his father, who became the donor after being found to be a 50% tissue (HLA) match. Doctors said the successful procedure means that patients from North India with this condition may no longer need to travel to southern states for treatment.
According to Prof. Sayan Sinha Roy from the Department of Clinical Hematology, the child was first evaluated by Prof. Deepti Saxena from the Department of Medical Genetics, where X-ALD was confirmed through genetic testing. After detailed counselling and consent from the family, the haplo-identical bone marrow transplant was performed on January 19, 2026. Six months after the transplant, the child's follow-up reports are normal.
Prof. Roy said that hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is currently the only treatment that can stop the progression of X-ALD if performed at an early stage of the disease. Early diagnosis and timely transplant are crucial for better outcomes.
The transplant was carried out under the leadership of Prof. Rajesh Kashyap, Head of the Department of Clinical Hematology. The transplant team included Prof. Sayan Sinha Roy, Dr. Louis, and Dr. Chandrachud, while Prof. Deepti Saxena played a key role in diagnosis and treatment planning. The procedure was performed under the National Programme for Rare Diseases.
Senior Technical Officer Manoj Kumar Singh also played a vital role by collecting stem cells from the father, checking their quality and quantity, and ensuring the technical processes required for the transplant were completed successfully.
What is X-ALD?
X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a rare inherited disorder caused by a mutation in the ABCD1 gene. The disease damages the protective myelin covering of nerve cells, affecting the brain and nervous system. It mainly affects boys.
What is a Haplo-Identical Transplant?
A haplo-identical transplant is performed when the donor and patient share about 50% HLA (tissue) match. If a fully matched donor is unavailable, a parent, sibling, or child can serve as the donor. In this case, the boy's father successfully donated stem cells.
