Now plasma replacement therapy will give relief to liver failure patients. Sanjay Gandhi PGI and King George's Medical University have successfully tested this therapy. The initial results have proved to be very encouraging. Liver failure patients have got a lot of relief from this therapy. Research scientists have put this success in front of the world. There are very few treatment options for liver failure. Liver transplant is the only option. When scientists researched sixteen patients with liver failure, they saw that the level of a chemical marker indicating liver failure was improved along with a reduction in the discomfort due to liver failure. Sixteen patients aged 27 to 48 with liver failure were studied to see the effect of this therapy. One to three plasma exchange therapy treatments were given during days 11–25 of admission. Significant improvement in serum bilirubin, INR, creatinine levels was observed after therapy. Complete resolution of hepatic encephalo (HE) occurred in 31% of patients. 50% had a favorable result.
What is plasma exchange therapy
In plasma exchange therapy, the patient's plasma is removed and replaced with an equal amount of plasma collected from a healthy donor. Harmful antibodies, cytokines, chemical toxins present in the patient's body are removed.
