Now the Doctor Will Talk to the Patient and AI Will Write the Report
Lucknow. A major change is coming to hospitals very soon. In the near future, the doctor will talk to the patient and AI running in the background will write the entire report. It sounds like something out of a movie, but trials have already started abroad and it is expected that this system could be seen in India very soon.
In fact, Microsoft's new generative AI model named Dragon Copilot has shown in the US that it can reduce doctors' reading and writing work by up to 50 percent.
How will it work? It is called Ambient Listening Technology. When the doctor and patient talk in the room, this AI will quietly listen to everything and automatically prepare its documentation. The doctor will not have to repeatedly look at the computer and type. His entire focus will be only on the patient. That is why it is now being said that in the coming time, AI will not just be a tool, but a clinical collaborator for doctors - a true partner.
Shedding light on this upcoming change is Clinical AI Expert Mansi Goyal. Mansi works as a Data Scientist at the US-based company Lucem Health. She works on EHR data of millions of patients to build AI that can detect heart rhythm disorders, liver disease and Type 1 diabetes at an early stage.
Mansi says, the earlier AI used to ask only one question - "Is there pneumonia in this X-ray?". But the new AI that is coming will do reasoning. It will connect a patient's five-year-old history, lab reports and medicines together to tell what the real disease could be.
But Mansi also gives a warning that even when this technology comes to a country like India, AI will not be able to replace doctors everywhere. When a patient has to be told about a serious illness like cancer, what is needed there is not a machine, but a human heart.
Therefore, in the future, AI can do small and low-risk tasks like filling forms, but for high-risk tasks like changing the dose of medicine and taking decisions in an emergency, today and tomorrow, the supervision of a doctor will remain final.
