NHM will provide free treatment of hepatitis in PGI
PGI becomes State Nodal Center
Treatment will be done under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program
In Sanjay Gandhi PGI, Hepatitis B and C patients will be examined and treated free of cost. This has brought great relief to the new and old patients coming to the institute daily. These patients will not have to pay any fee for tests and medicines. NHM has made PGI a State Nodal Center. The specialist doctors here will provide treatment at the institute as well as train doctors at the district level.
PGI Director Dr. RK Dhiman said that free treatment facility has been started in the institute with the help of NHM under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP). The tests and medicines are free for Hepatitis B and C patients. Due to its expensive treatment, many poor patients used to leave the treatment in between. They have got a big relief since free treatment started.
Outreach program will run
Dr. RK Dhiman said that being the state nodal center, PGI has got the responsibility of training doctors of district hospitals, CHCs and PHCs. As part of the outreach programme, PGI experts will train district doctors on how to treat patients suffering from Hepatitis B and C. So that patients can be treated at the nearest district hospital, CHC and PHC. The action plan of the program has been prepared. Training program will start soon.
More than 100 patients coming to OPD
Dr. Amit Goyal, gastroenterologist of PGI and in-charge of the state nodal center, told that six to seven new patients and about 100 old patients come daily in the institute's OPD. Patients from other states including UP come to the institute. About 40 percent of the patients coming to OPD are of Hepatitis B and C. In this, the treatment lasts for three to six months. Although treatment is possible with medicines, but due to the high cost of medicines, people are not able to get complete treatment.
