20 to 25 percent of brain tumors occur in the skull base (lower part of the brain). Apart from the tumor, there are many other problems including bundle of nerves in the skull base and structural defects. Skull base surgery is very complex. To teach the technique of this surgery to new neurosurgeons and to share their experience, Sanjay Gandhi PGI is going to organize the annual convention of the Skull Base Surgery Society of India from Friday. Organizing Secretary Prof. Arun Kumar Srivastava and head of the department Prof. Rajkumar told that surgery will be done on two patients in live surgery. Along with providing training in surgery on cadaver, a scientific session will be organized in the medical university. Pro. Arun Srivastava told that brain tumor can occur in any part of the brain. 20 to 25 brain tumors occur in the skull base. If there is a cancerous tumor, there is a possibility of recurrence. In noncancerous tumors, tumors do not recur for seven to eight years. The priority of surgery is decided based on the complexity of the case. Skull base surgery requires a team of specialists which includes neuro-otologists, anaesthesiologists, plastic surgeons, radiologists and rehabilitation specialists. Experts in skull base surgery from all over the country are coming to the convention. An expert is especially coming from America. There are 50 to 60 experts in skull base surgery in the entire country and this convention will help in increasing their number.
