Brain stroke, head injury, spinal cord injury (SCI) and multiple sclerosis result in weakness or total loss of strength in the arms and legs in more than 90 percent of cases. Even after treatment, weakness in body parts does not go away. The patient becomes dependent on family members. The family members also feel that the condition could not be returned to the previous condition due to the treatment. In such a situation, physical medicine rehabilitation can prove to be very effective. It can be improved to a great extent through medicine, surgery, spelling, occupational therapy and vocational therapy. 50 to 60 percent people become able to go to work as before.

Prof. of the department in the seminar of Awadh Association of Physical Medicine organized by the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Apex Trauma Center of Sanjay Gandhi PGI. Siddharth Rai told that the family members bring the patient after 6 to 7 months of treatment. In such a situation, the success rate of treatment reduces considerably. If physical treatment is started immediately after the treatment of brain stroke or spine injury, the success rate increases significantly. High blood pressure is a major cause of brain stroke or brain injury in road accidents. Spinal cord injury is a major cause of road accidents. In-charge of Trauma Center and Head of Neuro Surgery Department, Prof. Raj Kumar and Medical Superintendent and Head of Hospital Department, Prof. Rajesh Harsh Vardhan said that the Physical Medicine department of Apex Trauma Center is the first department of any trauma center in the state. This department is needed in every trauma center. Through physical treatment, the weakness in arms and legs caused by the disease can be removed and a person can lead a normal life. Prof. Anil Kumar Gupta, Head of the PMR Department of King George's Medical University, said that he is helping at the level in setting up new departments. More than 150 people received information from Lochia Institute, AIIMS Gorakhpur, KGMU and other institutes in the seminar.

There are many types of paralysis

Monoplegia – where one limb is paralyzed, Hemiplegia – where the arms and legs on one side of the body are paralyzed, Paraplegia – where both legs and sometimes the pelvis and some of the lower body are paralyzed, Tetraplegia – where Both arms and legs become paralyzed (also called quadriplegia).

Many problems can occur if paralysis is not treated.

If paralysis is left untreated for a long time, the muscles and tissues of the affected area may waste away. Urinary incontinence (inability to control the flow of urine) and bowel incontinence (where stool leaks from the back passage) may occur. Pressure ulcers or bed sores (sores that develop when the affected area of tissue is placed under too much pressure).
