Liver cancer surgery done with laparoscope for the first time in PGI

First controlled jaundice and then got relief from liver cancer.

Due to blockage in the bile duct, the jaundice marker bilirubin had reached 24.

Jaundice was controlled by opening Bile Duct by  tube .

27-year-old Kripa Sindhu, a teacher by profession and resident of Gorakhpur, suffered from severe jaundice. Serum bilirubin reached 24. Many problems including fever and vomiting started. Showed at many places but did not get relief from anywhere. The problems of pain, jaundice and fever increased. Sanjay Gandhi PGI reached here after getting tired, Prof. in the Gastro Surgery Department. Contacted Ashok Kumar sec. Blood test and CT scan revealed that there was cancer in the liver associated with the biliary system on the left side, which is called cholangiocarcinoma in medical language. Due to increasing jaundice and infection, bilirubin had increased to 24. Pro. Ashok was the first to remove the blockage in the bile duct by inserting a tube into the bile duct using PTBD (Bile duct through liver) technique. This normalized bilirubin. After controlling the infection, he underwent surgery. By laparoscopy technique, the left side segment of the liver along with the tumor was removed (left hepatectomy). After 12 hours of complex laparoscopic surgery, the tumor was successfully removed and the intestine was connected to the bile duct through a small incision in the abdomen. Laparoscopic major liver resection surgery has been performed for the first time in the institute. After the surgery, the patient improved rapidly and he had to stay in the ICU for observation only for a day.

Cirrhosis and changes in liver cause problems

It was a very challenging operation because there was biliary cirrhosis and change in the size of the liver. The jaundice of the first patient was corrected. Improved the patient's fitness through nutrition support.

Only one unit of blood was needed

There are many metabolic changes that occur during liver removal surgery. Which have to be repaired carefully. Due to the laparoscopic method, there was little to no change during the operation. There was no need for any blood transfusion during the operation, only one unit of blood was transfused after the surgery.
